Well, I've been trying to think of what to write to those with
friends in Manhattan -- luckily my newlywed nephew and his wife
were uptown, and are all right.

But then Jon called my name ... Jon, I know this sounds crazy,
but have you tried the glue trick? One doesn't normally use white
glue on plastic, of course ... I think my version in this case
(on samples only, as a test) would be to put a VERY thin layer
of white glue on the buckskin, and then very quickly smear a
very thin layer of CA on the plastic catch and apply the buckskin
immediately. On the butts, glue one end and let it set up first,
and then put a little white glue on the top end, a dot of CA glue
on the butt just under the catch shank, and stretch and press the
leather in place immediately.

Let me know how it goes ...

Susan

P.S. PVC-E with CA would seem to be a possible combination, as well.
