    Les, let's see; 1924 piano with "thuddy" bass strings. Sounds normal to
me. Twisting them is for when the core wire is loose compared with the
windings, which will give them that "cymbal" kind of sound. Twisting old,
crud-filled strings wouldn't help, I would think.
    Look, if she wants the bass to sound better, you've got to look at
replacing the strings, but of course, she doesn't want to spend the money to
have that done, right?
    Well, I'd like to win the lottery, too!  Some people want the sun, moon,
and stars, but they also want it for free. Just don't knock yourself out
trying to do everything possible on this piano while you're working on a
budget; if you want to try loosening up a couple of those bass strings, do
it on only a couple of samples. She has a very substandard piano, and if she
wants it to sound like a new Steinway grand, well, you're a technician, not
a magician.

    I practically never take off my flame-suit anymore.
