Tuning Pin Length?

Most, high quality uprights I have smashed up have the
pinblock glued to a very solid beam. Some cheaper ones
have had a hollowed cavity behind the block. But I've
found many open-faced blocks on Victorian pianos in
superb condition, even here in the South.
