rib replacement

Years ago there was a discussion on the list about this and I told you guys
about my old Bechstein uprights (at the time I had two, standing next to
each other like twins, both very old and beautiful). The ribs were new but
not the soundboard. Everything else I renewed as well.
The result?
A sound that is not for sale anymore.
A very rich creamy sound with renewed power because of the renewed ribs.

Much longer ago I got inspired by a violinmaker. At the time I spent many
hours in his atelier, bringing him a Dutch delicacy called 'gevulde koek' to
be eaten with a good cup o' coffee.
Because of my frequent visits at my friends violin heaven, I understood (I
thought) something about the principles of soundboards and strings.
The next step was to inspire the guys who, at the time, did the heavier jobs
for me (as I farmed out the soundboard, pin block and stringwork but always
did the action work myself).
These two young men were and are very gifted with wood and they now have
specialized in making new forte pianos and restoring old ones.

I now work together with Arnold Duin who is in Holland the leading
soundboard specialist.
We continually renew ribs and install new soundboards and I still stick to
gluing hammers, regulation, tuning and voicing although Arnold could easily
take my job as well.
