Sheesh! I've said this before. Use raw walnut or beech or maple veneer!
Walnut being the best choice. It is, as you say "non evasive". More so than
that leather! And it's more controllable. Leather will break down at a
faster rate than the wood. Besides, the walnut will not create jumpy pins!
Now, if it is an emergency and all you have is a strip of leather, by all
means. It's a nice alternative, under dire circumstances, for sure.
