I would not use pine, or spruce, too soft, nor would I use oak, maple or
beech, too hard.  Anything in between will work but if I have nothing
else I would go for a harder wood than a softer wood and if I can wait
until the next day I will use any good glue, PVCE, carpenters yellow
glue, epoxy, even Elmers Glue (yuck).

If you have to buy your plugs take what you can get but if you have the
means to make your own then you can pick and choose.
