Let's wait and see what Jon has to say, but I'll betcha a dozen donuts that "stain" is a way to misspell "satin". "Effect a satin finish with scotch brite." The scotch brite pads come in different grades of coarseness and are used on water based finishes much the same as steel wool is used on traditional lacquer finishes. You don't want to use the steel wool on a water-based finish because it will leave tiny bits of steel in/on the finish. If another coat of water-base ever goes on it, you may get little rust spots. The scotch brite pads work real well - I like them much better than steel wool.
