Don Wrote: I assume all the pianos were the same make and model and of similar age? Were they the same color too? I'm really glad someone is taking the time to do these comparisions. So we have unfortunately a flawed experiment--more than one tech tuned, and someone in the room who knew which was which--which defeats "double blind". Next time please add an totally aural tuned piano to the mix. It would be *so* wonderful to participate. Wish I could be there! <snip> Ah, the difference between an experiment and a chapter presentation! Yes, they are all 1974 vintage blond Baldwins with close serial numbers. Identical, unless you stop to recognize the grafitti... It's surprising though, noticing through the years how the tuning graphs from RCT differ for these "similar" pianos. I've never taken the time to compare inharmonicity from piano to piano. Wow! that would be a time-consuming project! I tried to take myself out of the picture during the listening phase by only having one of the pianos onstage, the other three were in placed either in the hall, or in a classroom. (Yes, now acoustics comes into play too!) Luckily, the differences were big enough to be noticed fairly quickly.. I had thought of adding the aural component, but wanted to keep this machine-specific. wish you could've joined us!
