Ancient adhesive on plastic key tops

Anybody ever try automotive brake cleaner? Seems like the cleaner would 
work great and the strong spray from the can would help to blast the gunk 
out of the groove. I just don't know if it will leave any residue. 
Shouldn't. I've been told that you can use it to clean stains on clothing.
