Is THAT why I come across so many spinets with a damp chaser dehumidifier 
bar?!!  

I agree, with your conclusion that the heat from the DC baked the elbows.  
I've seen many 'brittle-plastic-elbows/plastic-flanges-seem-fine' pianos.  
(Known as BPE/PFSF's;  often this is shortened to POS.)
