old "elbow" plastic

It appears that the DC or other heat source caused the plasticizers in
the plastic to evaporate, leaving only the brittle remains. Same thing
happens to the dashboard vinyl which will eventually crack from being
baked.

Is THAT why I come across so many spinets with a damp chaser
dehumidifier
bar?!!

I agree, with your conclusion that the heat from the DC baked the
elbows.
I've seen many 'brittle-plastic-elbows/plastic-flanges-seem-fine'
pianos.
(Known as BPE/PFSF's; often this is shortened to POS.)
