Methanol and wetter water

To make water "wetter" use a product called Photoflo available
from your local camera store. A two ounce bottle will last you a
life time. The formula is two parts denatured alcohol, one part
water, and a drop or two of Photoflo.

That vodka can be substituted for the denatured alcohol and
water is possible. It depends on denatured shrinks felt better
than grain or ethyl alcohol. So into a 50 ml sample bottle of
Phillips Vodka add 4 to 10 drops of Photoflo from an eye dropper.
To see how the Photoflo works first use an eyedropper to drop one
drop of straight vodka onto a hammer flange and see how it gets
absorbed. Then add the 4 drops of Photo flow to the little bottle
of vodka. Then put a drop of that onto a hammer flange and see
how much faster it sinks into the wood. ---ric

I have heard that denatured alcohol is really mostly grain
alcohol with a little bit of methanol or wood alcohol added to
keep the winos from drinking it.
