Methanol and wetter water

Does anyone have any data or reasoning for methyl
working better than ethyl? (Which seems the crux
of the matter ...)

The sole reason I see that any alcohol is in the
mixture at all is to lower the viscosity, so that
the water wicks into the cloth easier. Any alcohol is
alcohol, as far as viscosity goes, isn't it?
