I'm not the guy you asked to respond, but:
He didn't know the correct term for emery cloth and "sand(ing) cloth, or =
linen" was the closest he could come up with, I think. Some people =
just use a shoe-shine technique on it (with the strings removed), just =
enough to remove the nicks.

I was thinking I would take a small file and break it with a hammer. =
If it was an old one or flea market stuff, some pieces would cut better =
than others. Then use the sand linen like Oleg suggests.
