OT Nightmares of the Modern Age

Hi John,

I like that CD shredder! Pretty neat! A lower budget way to do the same
thing, albeit not as thoroughly, is to make radial scratches on the back
(not the face) of the CD, deep enough to go through the backing and flake
off the reflective layer where the info is stored. Do it over a trash can,
'cuz there will be a little shower of glitter -- if you do it right, that
is. I still like the CD shredder. I might consider investing in one!

I used to use an external CD-RW drive for backing up my machines, but they
quickly grew beyond what I could conveniently back up. My backup drive is
80 GB, and it's getting slightly stuffed. Full backups in duplicate
(because I always have my backups in duplicate) would be over a hundred CDs
in a go --50 per week!!! At that point, it would be more cost effective to
go with the online backup service, which sounds pretty cool too. I don't
know how I feel about streaming my sensitive data into cyberspace, though.
I presume it's encrypted for security... but I'm still a pretty paranoid
person.

Peace,
Sarah
