Ric,
Varnish is a soft, (for quite a while), flexible material. IMO, it can only
absorb vibrations, thus "damping" and absorbing the energy. If you have an
olde clunker laying around, try taking off a couple of unisons and putting
some varnish on the bridge top....let dry....re-install strings....tune and
see for yourself! <G>
