Hi Tom,
This "repair" is only an excuse for tipping a few. <G>
To quickly see if it will work Lower each string an octave and give the =
unison about 20 good strong whacks and bring the string back to pitch. =
Check with its neighbor for quality of sound. If it has improved some =
but not enough,
plan on removing all and doing the treatment and include adding one =
twist if there was none and two if there was some. Less twist as you go =
from high wound strings to low and only 1/2 on double wound.
The old coke bottles were great as the shape of the bottle kept the =
string from slipping off.

writes:

you loosen the first one off, remove it from the hitch, wrap it one =
turn round a beer bottle (a good idea to empty it first in an =
appropriate manner) then, holding the loosened hitch end in one hand and =
the neck of the (by now empty) beer bottle in the other, gently roll the =
bottle up and down the wrapped string. This loosens up the interstices =
of the windings and the string becomes more supple than it was. You then =
put the loop back on the hitch pin (not forgetting first to wind the =
string a bit - maybe a turn or so - in order to tighten the wrapping)

And... the piano is remarkably re-invigorated in the bass.<<

  >From what I've been told, please jump in on this subject, this =
"re-invigoration" of bass strings is not permanent. The only set I've =
ever done this to (although I didn't use a beer bottle...) still sounds =
better than it did originally, (It's been about 3 or 4 years...) but =
perhaps others can enlighten us as to the permanency of this technique?
