Hammer glue

I use a hot glue gun and clamp together temporarily.  I usually carry
with me some ointment to doctor up the 3rd degree burns on my fingers.

    I am trying to glue this hammer felt back on and am having a problem
with the glue.  I have been trying a white glue and clamps but it does
not hold. What kind of glue recommended?
