Subject: Extra Damper Lever Assembly

Here's what I sure is a stupid one...

On almost every upright and spinet piano I've worked on... there is an
extra damper lever assembly where the action brackets are. There is no
wire nor damper head/felt attached to the lever, but someone took the
trouble to put a lever, and sping there anyway.

Why?

Joey

            Joey,

            Not stupid at all---

It's called an auxiliary or dummy damper and is designed
to keep the damper rod away from the levers when the pedal is at rest.
The spring is much heavier than on the other damper levers and is often
the first source of noise as it will wear through the spring punching.
Replace the punching (if its there )or lube W/ V.J.
