Well, how about cost?

We pay the string-winders $3 to $5 each for wrapped strings, compared to
about $0.20 for 5' of #22 wire.

When you consider that the airlines omit olives from the salads served in
first class as a cost-cutting measure, 
it's a miracle that some pianos contain any bass strings at all.
