This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment On what basis do you characterize the soundboard in this piano as being = "good"? I think it is well established - and even addressed in = excruciating detail on Steiway's web site - that soundboard cracks are = not detrimental to the performance of a soundboard. (Yes, yes, yes, of = course, they are an indicator of the soundboard being damaged however - = but the crack itself doesn't hurt anything.) BTW, IMHO, no piano "needs" a soundboard unless it is missing one. = Whether replacement would be beneficial depends on what the owner = demands/wants from the piano and whether the current soundboard meets = his/her needs. If they don't hear a killer octave or perceive a lack of = dynamics or notice a lack of sustain, who's to say there is anything = wrong with a dead soundboard (as long as it maybe doesn't buzz real bad = - but hey, some folks don't even hear that!)? I would very much like to see pictures of the piano - thanks. I'm sorry to report that I don't really have any experience with valuing = such a piano. If it has a modern action and is overstrung, I should = think it might command a salvage price on a par with a similar model B - = what might that be now-a-days - about $10K, maybe more in some areas. It appears = to be rosewood and the case is pretty good. The board is surprisingly = good( a few narrow cracks) but everything else needs replacement = (definately pinblock). Interesting to see the bass string windings from = 1871. Anyway, I'm trying to come up with a ballpark market value for this = instrument. Any help from "y'all" would be appreciated.
