Lubrication as a wear preventative.

Hello Ryan and the List

This is an excerpt from a letter I sent to Renner in
Germany:

"I wonder if you could let me know about any adverse
effects of using the "Protek" brand lubricant on the
center bushings of your hammer shanks. It is a fairly
common practice in the U.S. to put a few drops of this
lubricant on the center bushing felt while preparing
a new shank/flange for installation and while sorting
the shanks for center bushing friction..."

And here is the relevant part of their response:

"Renner does not treat the center bushings.
To our knowledge there are no chemical reactions or
adverse effects when center bushings are treated.
Therefore, this may be done, there is nothing to say
against the treatment with a lubricant..."

List,
This general discussion on friction and factory
set-up of weighting leads me to wonder what
manufacturers pre-lubricate their centers ( beyond the
natural lanolin ) so that weight and leverage are the
prime aspects contributing to the "touch", and to
inhibit future wear.
I would also like to get opinions on favored
center pin lubricants.
     Thump
