Balwin spinet

Hello, list,
   I am going to be putting new bass strings on a '60s vintage Baldwin
spinet piano. Is it necessary to  lower the tension in the entire piano to
do this, or can I get by with taking all the bass strings off and putting
the new ones on? I have done this before, but I'd like to know if maybe I
was just lucky do it without big problems. Thanks
