Why not use the tapered pins that are already there? Wind the string/coil, a slight tap and you're there! That's the beauty of tapered pins. The only caveat would be if some yahoo, already "tapped" them too much. In that case, it is a good idea to ream/drill the holes with appropriate drill to make the hole the same dimension throughout it's length.
