Hi Terry, The strings go thru holes the web. When the strings are new, they render quite well--but later on they may become recalcitrant. When this happens instead of being able to "approach the pitch from above" the only way to get decent stability is to do the opposite and tune "just up to pitch". Of course few tuners work in that mode so the piano is seen as "difficult". Heintzman used a similar system in upgrights with holes in a massive iron "bar" that is part of the plate--on them the strings seem to render quite beautifully.
