To all Hammer heads When Bob Davis & I taught our "Everday Voicing" classes we came up with a handy little device which answered in some form what a hammer is doing under the pressure & strain of use. It shows visual deformation of the felt. It is a hand held press which you squezze with your hands on both sides. The felt top/crown will squash on top ,compress downward toward the molding and out into the shoulders. It is very instructive. The stiffer the hammer the less movement one will see. I recommend a bass or tenor hammer for this exercise. The Patent is no longer pending--grin So make one & enjoy it. Its instructive as a visual to clients as well. I also included a Wurzen Bass hammer cut up the middle. As the felt is exercised in & out you can see tension & compression happening before ones eyes. Do ti yourself this isn't actually very helpful. Regards to all hammer -philes Dale Erwin Erwins Pianos Restorations 4721 Parker Rd.
