I think this is the biggest clue: If I played a note by itself, no problem, but if I played = octaves going down ... It sounds like the key/damper/something an octave up is hitting the string of the note an octave down. Try holding down the keys in the lower octave without making the note sound, then striking the notes an octave up. Then try holding down the notes in the upper octave without making the notes sound and hitting the lower notes. Should give you some more clues as to how to proceed.
