Hello Roger J and List.=20
These "Jolly loops" are exactly as was used by Broadwood. I call them =
the Broadwood Hitch-pin Loop. Because they are so very secure and have =
very little movement from new I always use this style of loop when =
restringing the metals. So far as the covereds are concerned I remain =
happy with the standard twisted loop as supplied by the bass string =
maker.

Hi Dean,
James in now offering the Jolly loops, there is an =
extra charge. the knot is only about 7mm long ,average. You will have to =
measure the diameter of the hitch pin, and he will supply precision =
loops. The stretch of the knot is way less than the traditional English =
loop. Some pianos, have two hitch pin diameters in the bass.
We have field tested this system over several years. Tuning stability =
caused by knot creep is significantly superior.

I love Arledge strings. Most of my work is done on middle of the =
road to
low end pianos and they sound great. Much more consistent than I was
getting from Mapes. When I used Mapes I would get sections that did =

strings?
Who knows. Once I asked them to remake a section which they did and =
I
got some improvement. I've never had to do that with Arledge.
At the Indy convention last October Del spoke about reducing the =
size of
the loops and getting them up off the plate to add flexibility in =
the
backscale. Attached is a link to a picture of a Walters grand that =
was
there showing off an unusual hitch pin Del likes to use.
The next set of strings I ordered from Arledge I tried to get the
shorter loop and they said they really couldn't do it. Has that =
changed?
I want a set with the "Jolly" loops. ;-)
I haven't tried the unusual pins. But I did try sticking a thin =
washer
under the loops of one set to get the strings off the plate. It =
worked.
Hard to tell how much improvement it actually made.
Dean

O. While the piano also had a new soundboard with a modified bass
bridge which shortened the cantilever and extended the backscale a
bit, not to mention recalculated bass scale (thank you Del =
Fandrich),
the bass quality on this instrument was exceptional.

Hi David,
Including photo to answer the curious. =
Theoretical
increase in back scale length, to improve bass bridge response.
