We borrowed a Prius for a long weekend a while back -- interesting car. My right
foot has been calibrated somewhat heavier than my left and I was surprised and
pleased to find when I filled the tank just before returning the car to the
dealer that our average mileage of mostly freeway driving (at 75+) and some city
driving (making no concession at all for the fact that it was a hybrid) netted
me 47 mpg. I thought that was pretty good. 

Unfortunately the dog we had at the time wouldn't fit....
