vintage steinway bench

Joe,
         I presume that we're talking about a stool not a bench. Is the 
spindle with the thread wooden? If so it can easily be remade if it is 
stripped. Otherwise I fail to see how it "unwinds" unless the person 
sitting upon it is spinning around. More details please?
