 Varnish may be soft, but as you have noticed, 
not all varnished benches become so soft and sticky.

Dave and List:
The finish on the bench is the same finish that's on the piano.  That has
been lacquer for 50 years (that's a guess).  Lacquer eventually breaks down
when repeatedly exposed to water and solvents-the one found in cleaner s and
polishes i.e. petroleum distillates.  The temporary "fix" is another coat of
polish.
