Ugh. I hate sitting on those benches.
Seems like when I was selling a lot of used pianos that I had some
success with spraying a little more lacquer on the top from a touch up
spray can.

Varnish may be soft, but as you have noticed,
not all varnished benches become so soft and sticky.

The finish on the bench is the same finish that's on the piano. That
has
been lacquer for 50 years (that's a guess). Lacquer eventually breaks
down
when repeatedly exposed to water and solvents-the one found in cleaner s
and
polishes i.e. petroleum distillates. The temporary "fix" is another
coat of
polish.
