The strip mute is so cumbersome to insert for it means = distorting the strings sideways to do so - particularly at the top end. = Someone on the List even suggested that to use a rubber wedge they first = warmed it up before insertion (where did I hear that before?) otherwise = the temperature of the rubber upset the tuning!!! I do use just one = wedge throughout my tuning sessions. In the grand it is the narrow = rubber wedge with the metal handle and in the uprights it is a Papps = wedge which I sometimes change for the narrow rubber wedge in the bass = end. I'm an "aural" tuner - and a "lefty" at that. >From the land of Sunshine and Fun (at least, it is today!) :-) Michael G.(UK) ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Farrell=20 To: Pianotech=20 Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 1:33 AM Subject: Re: Moving from Uprights to Grands I know its been said before, but I have the urge to reinforce it: = celebrate with a bottle of champagne, sit down and tune - oh no! - sit = down, tune that grand, and then open up the bottle of champagne! The only thing I can add directly related to tuning is that if you = tune unisons as you go (don't strip mute), you might want to consider = getting some felt mutes - they really work great on grands. Below are = the tools I use for tuning grands (except my tuning lever). Good luck and enjoy! (Gosh, I sure prefer tuning grands rather than = verticals!!!)
