Two of the things I love about this business are (A) the frequent need to use creative, unique methods to make pianos look good, sound nice, and play well, and (B) the occasional chance to take ugly things and make them beautiful--even for us non-rebuilder mostly-tuner types.

Piano is a 1922 Winton 5'1" grand. (This is a D.H. Baldwin-built stencil, it seems). Owner had refinished it and done a very nice job, light walnut. Then their puppy did some serious chewing on the bottom of the lyre . My task: rebuild the whole assembly.

Picture One: Couldn't remove the chewed up upper board because the whole assembly is glued and, probably, mortised or doweled together. Used a plane and then an orbital sander to trim back the overhang and bevel it so that the damage was removed. Sanded, stained, and applied polyurethane. (Sorry, forgot to take a before picture.) The bench, BTW is from an older Hamilton studio. It belongs to the Army and I think they took it on maneuvers; It was all smashed, scruffed up, and ugly. I rebuilt and strengthened the frame, painted the legs and frame black, removed the top finish, sanded, stained, etc., and billed them $100, about half of the replacement cost.

Picture Two: The rods had little top hat-shaped grommets, all split and worn. Nothing like them that I could find in my shop or in the catalogs (?) so had to improvise.

Picture Three: Put a new center rail punching on each end of the rod (you know, one of the ones in the drawer from that time you spilled them and mixed up all the sizes). Slip on a piece of shrink tube. Hit it lightly with a heat gun or flame. It will want to ride up, so do it lightly, push it back in place before it's completely shrunk, then zap it again.

Picture Four (focus next time, dufus): I used two layers to make the plastic a little thicker, red then black, in this case. If you smel something like a sheep on fire, you are overdoing the heat. Yeah, I did it.

Picture Five: Use nippers or scissors to circumcise the excess material.

Picture Six: Get some of this stuff to clean and polish the brass in about 10 minutes for all three rods. Or you could spend an hour at the old polishing wheel with some brown tripoli ... your choice. Twinkle is real cheap--if you find it at a yard sale like my wife did. Ha.

Picture "Ta Daaaaa": The result. I polished up the old brass pedals, too. You could spray brass lacquer on these parts if you wanted too, but I always figure the stuff would rub right off anyway, especially on the sustain pedal.
