In a reply in the not too distant past you stated that you felt that some compressioning (is that a word) was necessary for good tone. I could be mistaken, but I don't think so and life is too short to go searching. I'm not looking to rehash the debate I was just wondering if your opinion had changed given this new revelation at Steinway. Anyway, installing the board at 6.5% EMC (as the RC&S guys are doing as well, as it turns out at H. Steinway, if they are not misinforming you) will result in a very small amount of compression. I think 6.5 is equivalent to about thirty something percent RH which would put the panel under a slight amount of compression at DC controlled 42%. David, This is simply not true. I have never once offered any such opinion. What I have done is insist that RC , CC, and so called RC&S boards are all different ways of accomplishing a piano soundboard, each with their own characteristics both acoustical and structural, and that comparing the three in terms of which is inherently better is quite useless. Because none of these can really make any such claim. Given that insistance on nutrality with regard to subjective preferences, and given the number of times I've written on those lines I really am at a loss as to where you got the idea that the below is true. Cheers Richard Brekne ------------------------------------------------------------ I ask because you had stated previously that it was your opinion that compression crowning was necessary to achieve the type of tone that you found to be the most to your liking. You cited Hamburg Steinway as one example of that. Since it turns out that Hamburg Steinway is, as you report, not compression crowning any more than the current group of rib crowned and supported designers, I was just wondering if your sentiments with respect to compression crowning as a requirement for superior tone production remained unchanged.
