Holes in keys

David,
that is weird! I notice they are lined up with the side notches and the keys are scored crossways just below the holes. More puzzles?  Something to do with keytop replacement or cutting out the key originally.  I have never seen anything like that before.

What are these holes for in the bottom of the keys.  They are 3/32” in diameter, and 3/4” deep.  They are in a Steinway L from 1999.
