I made a simple gauge using 3 screws (#6 x 1") and a small piece of 
wood 3/8 x 3/8 x 2".  Drill three holes 3/4" apart for the screws.  Put in the screws 
all the way and file the ends (not the heads) flush (with each other, they should
stick out of the wood at least 1/2").

To use, get the screws flush on a flat surface.  Then place on string and 
adjust the center screw until it stops rocking. 1/8th turn of a screw is 
about .3 degrees of downbearing (if using #6 32 threads/inch screws).
