I go a similar route and simply tape an appropriate length of soft wood to the tip - when the tip contacts the plate, it's time to stop. When the nail head contacts the frame, the palm nailer stops. I find that I have very little leveling to do when the job is finished. You have to experiment to what length you make the nail, anyway it makes the job much faster.
