Installing new key end felts

I use a knife, something like Schaff's #216, and thick hot 
hide glue on the key ends. About a half hour after 
application, the felt is securely attached, but the glue isn't 
hard, and the knife will easily both separate the keys and 
slice the felt. The trick, ideally, is to not pour glue 
between the keys in the first place.
