Comin' Apart

Customer has a 1916 Willard player with a case problem: The lid is one of those that has the back half attached to the pinblock, frame and top back beam, while the front half opens on a continuous hinge.

The back of the fixed part of the lid has become partially UNfixed and has lifted about a quarter inch, lifting with it, also, a piece of wood about 3/4" thick that was attached across the top of the back of the piano to hide the gaps, I think. (Hope this is reasonably clear...) Gently prying on the back of the lid produces no movement at all.

I don't THINK the pinblock is involved and I'm pretty sure the actual top beam of the back is not involved, either, but I'd like to be sure! And, it would be nice to repair the lid, too. No one knows how this damage happened, the piano was not dropped or anything.

Question: There are some screws in a row through the top of the plate (smaller than and separate from the regular plate screws and bolts). I think taking these out will facilitate removing the lid but I fear the lid is also heavily glued and am wondering ... how can you "ruin" old case glue (probably hide or fish) when it is under a thick board (back of the lid) that we do not want to crack? Or, more simply put, how do ya take this sucker apart???
