Bill Peterson asked: "I seem to remember a thread about a faster whippen or a new vertical with a much better grand type feel. I would appreciate any information on this."

  Thank you,

  Bill,
You are probably referring to the Fandrich Action, invented by Darrell Fandrich. It is, IMO, the only significant improvement to an Upight for over 100 years. Yes, it does play like a grand. It must be regulated like a grand, as well. If a tech attempts to regulate it like an upright, he/she will be in deep doo-doo.<G>
Darrell has several versions available, on a regular basis. Any serious player, who can't afford a grand or doesn't have the room for a grand, needs one of the Fandrich & Sons Uprights, IMHO!!

Yes - I service a Fandrich (one of the earliest produced) and am so amazed by this upright piano that I'd not hesitate to trade my Baldwin L for it (although the L is probably worth more $$$). The action is so sensitive as to allow "breathing" on the keys to produce pppp tones. It is nearly impossible to depress a key, no matter how soft or slow, and not produce a tone. My understanding from e-tag with Mr. Fandrich is that he's entered an agreement with Petrov to produce the pianos using his action. The one I service I believe was hand made by Fandrich himself (I could be wrong there, though).

Also, I seem to recall Mr. Fandrich writing me that they supply an instructional video for techs on regulating this action - which he said is easier to do than for a conventional upright. Check the website: www.fandrich.com
