In the middle it might not be too bad; you'll have access to the hitch pins.  It's the top octave that's a killer.

Take a safety pin, put it around a neighboring string from the top, and also put the hitch end of your new strings through it.  You'll be able to thread it right down.

You can also use Alan's suggestion of a thin tube, like a brake line or curtain rod, and just put half the string in it, to prevent twisting.
