Cut through the cord with a scalpel blade each side of the spring
coils; remove the broken spring, push out the cord from the sides
towards the middle using the flattened end of a wire or centre pin;
buy some butt spring cord.

If the cord comes without a pointed end ready made, remove the yarns
from the centre for about 2", soak the remaining braid 'tube' with
glue and twist it tight to give you a thin hard end to feed through
the holes and the spring.

Adjust the coils of the spring before installing so that the spring
ends up at a right angle to the shank as in the picture.
