Every set of knuckles I have ever purchased as a red (sometimes green)
line placed at the base of the leather by the core that indicates the
direction the knuckles should be glued. There is some discussion about
which direction you should set the nap.... but there is no discussion
about the need to be consistant. Hence the marker. Makes it just that
quicker to install. As to the whole discussion about which direction is
the <<right>> on.... grin... I'm not going there.

Leather has a "nap" direction. Stroke it one way and it is very smooth,
stroke in the other direction and it is rough (or at least not as
smooth).
So the knuckles have a "nap" direction. You are correct that this
direction
is not indicated on replacement knuckles. Nor is grain direction
indicated
on a piece of wood from a lumber yard - yet in many applications grain
direction is important. The professional is expected to be able to
identify
these characteristics and respond accordingly.
