Thanks to all who responded to my post. Sorry for the delay in responding - my computer crashed soon after I sent the post. I just got back to normal operation.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I decided that it would be best not to advise the customer in the store, I'm going to let them make their own decisions. As for the option of refurbishing the Yamaha G2, the customer is not interested - they want to buy new.

I still would like to hear from someone with experience on the Pramberger models since if they buy one, I will likely be servicing it. Thanks.

    Dave,

While I'm not familiar with Prambergers, I've heard they are decent instruments. Others on this list are undoubtedly more qualified to offer opinions on them.

I do get a fair amount of requests for advice about new pianos. It can be sticky, especially if you get any business from the store that's doing the selling. If I know something about the instruments in question, I will offer advice on the phone or e-mail, or say "yea" or "nay" to models I am familiar with. My policy is to NOT go into stores to look at new pianos for customers because I don't want to have to: a). tell untruths to a customer b). mess up a potential deal for someone who gives me a fair amount of referral business.

Used pianos are a different matter entirely. There may be problems that are not evident to either the buyer or seller. An evaluation by a qualified tech may save the customer many $ and headaches.

  Hope this helps,

I'm looking for a little knowledge and advice. I have a customer that I tune for regularly. She has a 25 year old Yamaha G2 that is used for occasional, mostly amateur performances. Not a bad piano but its beat and worn out. She is not interested in rebuilding, she wants to replace it with a new piano. This is a commercial situation so she has a budget to stay within. She is looking at a new 5' 10" Pramberger grand, model JP-179L I think, at a local store and she is asking me for my opinion on the piano and weather or not she should buy it. This piano is one of the newer ones that I think is made by Samick.
Here is where I need some help. First, does anyone have any experience with these pianos? I took alook at one at the store, seemed OK and the price is in her range, but I'd like to here your opinions. Second, she is asking me to advise her. She doesn't play so she can't try it out and form her own opinion. I have been working with her for a couple of years and I know that she trusts my judgement, but I don't really have any experience advising people regarding new pianos. While I want to help her out, I'm not sure that I'm qualified to do so. What are your opinions?

  Thanks to all in advance,
