Maybe I should use the Sartre philosophy to explain to my client why her squeaky damper system doesn't really matter. Fortunately, this client is not a disagreeable sort. I once tuned for a French teacher at a boarding school. She wasn't home and there was a horrific squeak from the bottom board. Not having my tilter, nor any wood wedges to stick under the piano, I looked on her bookshelf and saw multiple copies of Sartre's 'Being and Nothingness' (in French). I used one of them to prop up the bottom board and voila no more squeak. I left a note explaining what I did and why, with the comment that Sartre was wrong, existence does have both meaning and purpose.
