>From: "Farrell" <mfarrel2 at tampabay.rr.com> >Just when you thought you've seen everything! What on earth is that thing? >Better yet, why? It is a keyboard layout with 6 rows of keys. Within each row there is a wholestep of notes to the next key. Look here: http://www.thecipher.com/wholetone-keyboard_speller1.html The aim was to play with the same finger pattern in each scale. 1882 Paul von Jankó invented that keyboard. Blüthner, Feurich and Pfeiffer made some Janko pianos, but also smaller companies like Carl Heinke, Berlin. Actually, there was Janko association in Vienna 1905 and in Berlin there was a conservatory with a a discipline for playing on Janko keyboards in 1906. I saw an original piano with Janko keyboard in a museum for musical instruments in Berlin. Looks really funny.
