Of course one school of thought now is, learning to hear the "whole sound" as Virgil Smith stated last night at our PTG meeting. I think counting partials might be like eight tracks, a thing of the past according to what I've heard last night, but you never know.

Charlie-
In piano technology school students spend several weeks tuning unisons in the middle of the piano, where it is easier to hear and control, and more forgiving of mistakes; then they gradually work up to the top of the piano.
It takes tremendous patience to become a piano technician, and you will learn more patience if you slow down and take it little steps at a time. Buying expensive equipment will not turn you into a piano technician overnight.
Practice tuning unisons in the mid-range and learn the overtone series.
