Mark asked: "Anybody know if a source is available for these older M & H BB buttons? (see attached photo) I am finishing up a BB and it uses this very effective style of buttons. Seems to be hammer felt as a core and a very thin woven scarlet cloth pulled snugly over and glued to the hammer felt. Don't have any idea how they accomplished that with no folds or seams in the scarlet felt - must've given it a thorough soaking in something. It is amazing to me that they have been doing their job since 1926 with no apparent wear, other than to be too dingy now to use on a refinished BB.
If anyone has any idea where to snag some of these (doubtful, I know), or have had success duplicating them, I would be grateful to know about it. Otherwise, I'll likely be reaching for the rubber. Inferior, but available."

Mark,
These are easily made, using leather ala Steinway/Chickering or felt ala M&H and a whole lot of others. If you check closely you will see something that looks like a balance rail punching in the center. Drill the appropriate size/shape of indentation in a block of wood lay appropiate felt over indentation, put a bit of hide glue on and lay the "core" punching, (make the proper size using Arch Punches). Then simply lay a thick board over the whole thing and clamp the hell out of it!<G> Wait for the glue to dry. Remove the clamps/block and felt punching. Trim and insert. There may be different sizes for the lid as opposed to the fall board, etc. Hence make the dimple in the wood a different size. Get it? Pretty simple once you've done a few.
