The only people I've seen advocating the occasional seating of strings are those who have experience with new pianos, where sometimes the string isn't seated properly to begin with. As RonN pointed out last week, there is quite a bit of side bearing at the bridge pin, and consequently lots of friction. This outweighs the small amount of force from downbearing pulling down on the string. It is therefore possible I think for a string to be installed, put through the "s curve" at the bridge pin, brought up to pitch, and not be seated cleanly across the bridge. Jonathan Finger RPT
