Paul - I personally haven't suggested that the strings move up the pin
(in fact I haven't seen anyone suggest this).
The only people I've seen advocating the occasional seating of strings
are those who have experience with new pianos, where sometimes the
string isn't seated properly to begin with.
As RonN pointed out last week, there is quite a bit of side bearing at
the bridge pin, and consequently lots of friction. This outweighs the
small amount of force from downbearing pulling down on the string. It
is therefore possible I think for a string to be installed, put through
the "s curve" at the bridge pin, brought up to pitch, and not be seated
cleanly across the bridge.
